More CO2 is GOOD for Earth – Seeing is Believing

Isolated for 42 days in chambers of ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations, we periodically document the growth of cowpea plants (Vigna unguiculata) via time-lapse photography

NASA says CO2 is making Earth greener. Studies have shown that increased concentrations of carbon dioxide increase photosynthesis, spurring plant growth.

A quarter to half of Earth’s vegetated lands has shown significant greening over the last 35 years largely due to rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change on April 25.

An international team of 32 authors from 24 institutions in eight countries led the effort, which involved using satellite data from NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer instruments to help determine the leaf area index, or amount of leaf cover, over the planet’s vegetated regions.

The greening represents an increase in leaves on plants and trees equivalent in area to two times the continental United States.

Green leaves use energy from sunlight through photosynthesis to chemically combine carbon dioxide drawn in from the air with water and nutrients tapped from the ground to produce sugars, which are the main source of food, fiber and fuel for life on Earth.

Studies have shown that increased concentrations of carbon dioxide increase photosynthesis, spurring plant growth. Prominent Scientist William Happer Tells Congress: Earth is in a ‘CO2 Famine – The increase of CO2 is not a cause for alarm and will be good for mankind – Children should not be force-fed propaganda, masquerading as science.

Happer, who has published over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers, made his remarks during today’s Environment and Public Works Full Committee Hearing entitled “Update on the Latest Global Warming Science.”

“Many people don’t realize that over geological time, we’re really in a CO2 famine now. Almost never has CO2 levels been as low as it has been in the Holocene (geologic epoch) – 280 (parts per million – ppm) – that’s unheard of. Most of the time [CO2 levels] have been at least 1000 (ppm) and it’s been quite higher than that,” Happer told the Senate Committee.

The Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change was created to disseminate factual reports and sound commentary on new developments in the world-wide scientific quest to determine the climatic and biological consequences of the ongoing rise in the air’s CO2 content.

It meets this objective through weekly online publication of its CO2 Science magazine, which contains editorials on topics of current concern and mini-reviews of recently published peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, books, and other educational materials.

In this endeavor, the Center attempts to separate reality from rhetoric in the emotionally-charged debate that swirls around the subject of carbon dioxide and global change.

In addition, to help students and teachers gain greater insight into the biological aspects of this phenomenon, the Center maintains on-line instructions on how to conduct CO2 enrichment and depletion experiments in its Global Change Laboratory (located in its Education Center section), which allow interested parties to conduct similar studies in their own homes and classrooms.

Good, in fact excellent! I applaud this confirmation of what is pretty well known by now. But I must ask, when do skeptics move off dead center and start dismantling the swindle?

Our favorite slandered trace gas is overall a coolant – following not preceding temperature change, interacting; with infrared solar radiation mainly at minus 80 Celsius, radiating away terrestrial heat as the satellites show, reflecting back solar energy/heat with the smoke of fossil fuel burning, greening, hence cooling, the Earth. Now what?

Early in the “debate,” Soon and Balyunas hit dead center with “it’s the Sun, stupid.” Since then, in 2009, Gerhard Gerlich and Ralf Tscheuschner shredded the notion of a “greenhouse” – the alarmists’ high castle for ruling peasantry.– and in 2011 Gerhard Kramm and Ralph Dlugi rebutted the hatchet job on Gerlich & Tscheuschner.

The climate carousel would stop if we the opposition took up existing arguments actually toxic to CAGWH, striking at its roots. That is, the sun drives atmospheric convection and evaporation-condensation, and solar-linked ocean oscillations (ENSO, NAO) are paramount heat controls. Combined, they are climate.

Actually, the best argument is Prevost´s principle. From Planck´s book “the theory of heat radiation”:
“But the empirical law that the emission of any volume-element depends entirely on what takes place inside of this element holds true in all cases (Prevost’s principle).”
    https://www.gutenberg.org/files/40030/40030-pdf.pdf

Prevost´s principle, which Planck refers to, is:

-The emission from a body depends only on the internal state.

The climate cult argues that the atmosphere increases the emission from the surface, but the atmosphere is EXTERNAL to the surface. Planck says that Prevost´s principle always holds, no exceptions. So, if surface emission increases, it can only be caused by a change in the internal state of the Earth.

To change the internal state you have to go through the first law of thermodynamics, ΔU=Q-W. U is the internal state, and only heat and work can change the internal state. Heat is defined as the energy in transfer from high to low temperature, and since the atmosphere is colder than the surface it can´t transfer heat to the surface. The greenhouse effect doesn´t include work for warming the surface. So there´s no route for the greenhouse effect to warm the surface and still follow Prevost´s principle and the first law.

Prevost´s principle is all you need to debunk the greenhouse effect.

    Hi Lit,
On a summer day go out into the ocean off the Mexican coast. During the day the atmosphere heats up but the water remains cold. How can the water be heating the atmosphere? Heat is kinetic energy (mass times energy) and objects do not radiate or transfer mass, only energy. The laws of thermodynamics are wrong because they include mass. To make your car go faster try. colliding with a slower moving large truck. Since the truck has more kinetic energy, some energy (v^2) should transfer to your car increasing its velocity.
The atmosphere is heated by the N2 and O2 converting the uv coming from the sun into kinetic energy.

Congratulations on demonstrating the obvious life giving virtues of CO2.

In the world’s oceans the plankton feed on algae which live there thanks to the CO2 dissolved in seawater. In turn the fish feed on the plankton. Similarly the sea life including the crabs and shell fish and corals depend on the CO2 ions to build their shells which are made of carbonate.

I come from the south of England where in the Cretaceous era vast thicknesses of chalk and limestone were precipitated from seawater because the CO2 level was so high that the solubility limit of calcium carbonate was exceeded. This is simple high-school precipitation chemistry.
