Massive Diesel Engines Prop Up Australia’s Green Energy Fiasco
How does Australia deal with the terrible and chaotic wind and solar power intermittency problem in its electric grid? How about with massive diesel engines used to power large ships?? Sound crazy? Not in Australia.
If a country is going to ramp up power generation with insanely erratic wind and solar power, then we shouldn’t be surprised to see these enormous diesel ship engines used to try and fix the problem.
Thus, if we have stupid solutions then we must use stupid bandaids. Again, the insanity continues.
The credit for the information in this brief article goes to StopTheseThings.com, which focuses on the problems associated with wind and solar power generation. The article, Ships Ahoy! Giant Diesel-Fuelled Ship Engines ‘Solution’ For Australia’s Renewable Energy Crisis, provided me a few good laughs and the desire to share it on the SRSroccoReport.com.
Notice the two workers next to the engine? That should give you an idea of the size of this beast. According to the article linked above, AGL Energy Limited has installed 12 of these engines at the Barker Inlet Power Station in Torres Island, Australia. The total output from these dozen ship engines is rated at 210 MW (MegaWatts).
Here’s another picture of Wartsila’s 50DF Diesel Ship Engine at the factory plant.
These Wartsila engines can run on diesel, natural gas, and bunker oil. Can you imagine how much fuel a dozen of these engines consume to balance the power lost from wind and solar generation?? If you read the article linked above, which I highly recommend, wind power generated in Southern Australia can see drops of 3,000 MWs!!
What is the purpose of these new dozen Wartsila 50DF Diesel Engines? The following article from the Financial Review, AGL flicks switch on SA gas power in time for summer, quoted below:
The addition of the 210-megawatt generator is expected to beef up security of electricity supply in the fragile South Australian market, which is largely reliant on weather-dependent renewables and imports from other states to meet demand.

The South Australian energy market wasn’t fragile until wind, and solar power generation was ramped up. Now, I am not blaming the problem on the Wartsila Diesel Engine. It is an excellent engine if you want to power a large ship, but it’s not a wise long-term solution for balancing wind and solar power
Furthermore, with the ramping up the supposedly renewable wind and solar power, Southern Australia has one of the highest electricity prices in the world. More on this in detailed upcoming Gold Member article.
Lastly, it is simply amazing how intelligent people are making extremely stupid decisions regarding future energy supply. If we continue to increase wind and solar power generation globally, it will only make the coming ENERGY CLIFF impact much worse than if we remained on fossil fuels alone.

Brian, “fossil fuel” also correctly referred to as carbon based energy sources, does NOT contribute to climate change as in global warming. Yes they can and do generate power “around the clock,” no they do not contribute to climate change which is a completely natural process basically controlled by the Sun and the oceans.

Most of Europe and Britain has the same scam, where when the weather changes and solar and wind generation fails, the diesels kick-in. In Europe and Britain of course these things are kept hidden and become hidden ‘renewable’ generation figures on the statistics.
Europe and Britain where statistics are whatever the elites and powerbrokers say they are, where crony capitalism, insider ‘carbon’ trading, and profiteering at the hard earned taxpayers’ expense is quite normal.
The other Europe and Britain scam yet to be declared is the looming debt crisis.

I appreciate your ‘wisdom’. So here I try to focus it back to Science Can we agree that the fundamental basis is the observation of ‘natural’ phenomena and not intellectual reasoning?
Time after time I have read that the temperature of the natural atmosphere decreases with increasing altitude as if this an obverse fact. No, this is purely the result of reasoning. It seems those who write this have never inspected the data of actual atmospheric sounding data.
For the fundamental problem is the historical fact that there was no atmospheric sounding data when what I read was initially reasoned.
Yes, a historical facts, which refutes the statement I just made, was reviewed by R.C. Sutcliffe in his 1966 book ‘Weather and Climate’. “When it became firmly established from observations on mountains and in manned and free gallons that the air became steadily colder as the altitude increased, scientists were very ready to generalize and to assume that the cooling went on indefinitely to the limit of the atmosphere.”
However, on how many detailed observations was this generalization based. For systematical, regular, measurements of the atmosphere’s temperature at measured altitudes was not begun until after WWII when the technology of ‘radar’ (with which a reasonably accurate altitude could be determined) became available.
Such atmospheric soundings are made at 4am and 4pm (local time) from balloons launched at an airport about 4 miles from my home. Hence, my interest in the measured data of these regular soundings.
This morning the atmospheric temperature as routinely measure at the surface was 12.4C and it steady increased to 22.8C at an altitude 393 meters (m). Above which the temperature did not vary more than +/-2C for 15 measurement until the altitude of 1768m was reached.
Clearly, the data of this one sounding refutes the generalization made in 1899. Of course this is only a single sounding. But if one reviews the data of many sounding made at many locations, it is not hard to find the ‘temperature’ inversion observed, in this case below an altitude of 393 meters. It is more rare to find thick layer (1385m) of atmosphere whose temperature is nearly isothermal (constant).
Cause and Effect. The effects are the two devotions from the accepted generation. The cause of the inversion can be explained with the reasoning that earth surface cooled fast than the atmosphere above it and hence by thermal conduction created, during the nighttime the temperature inversion.
The cause of the isothermal layer requires to more observations. At 5am stars directly above could still be seen even if my location was in a city of about 170,000 with many lights. Hence, the weather service at the airport reported that the atmosphere was clear and I saw that it was clear.
However, after sunrise it was easy to see there was a white ‘haze’ which prevented me from seeing two mountains whose peaks were at altitudes greater than 3000m, both at distances greater than 50km away and at different directions of about 90 degrees. From which I assume this haze involved a large region.
I have read that Richard Feynman, in ‘Feynman Lectures on Physics’ had taught his Caltech students that clouds would be light if their particle’s had diameters greater than the longest wavelength of light visible to their eyes. But in the case of the atmosphere these haze particles had to be very diffuse because they did not prevent me from seeing stars through a maybe 1.4km thick haze layer (path length) at the same time they limited my visibility through much longer path length which might be approaching 50km.
I could go on reviewing more details of the system about which I had both qualitative observations and quantitative observations, but if you do not see my point I doubt if they would help you see the generation to which I leap with simple reasoning.
The isothermal layer is the result of the haze particles which are rapidly emitting and absorbing IR photons toward each other according to their temperatures so that the entire atmosphere system of the haze layer quickly becomes an isothermal equilibrium system.
Now I ask: What is your wisdom about my cause and effect reasoning?

The United States Strategic Petroleum Reserve is currently at 635.2 million barrels of oil. 635 million barrels of oil equals 1,079,123,092,000 megawatts. 1,079,123,092,000/100 = 10,791,230,920; 10,791,230,920 X $3.6 billion(1) = $3,884,831,310,000,000,000,000,000,000 (octillion).
The United States’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2017 was $19,390,000,000,000 (trillion). Battery storage to replace the strategic petroleum reserve would cost more than 100,000 GDPs!
THERMODYNAMICS AWOL
Climate change mechanics conspires to do away with the physics of the atmosphere, where action and reaction is abandoned. When a new gas molecule is introduced into the dense troposphere, dislocation takes place, where if the new molecule is denser than the atmosphere (contains less heat energy), such as carbon dioxide, the gas molecule sinks displacing upwards the warmer nitrogen and oxygen molecules, thereby cooling the area of dislocation. Conversely, if the new gas molecule has more heat energy than the nitrogen-oxygen based atmosphere (such as methane), the new molecule rises, displacing relatively cooler nitrogen and oxygen molecules downwards, which displaces upwards relatively more heat retaining nitrogen and oxygen molecules, thereby cooling the area of dislocation. Thermodynamics in action in the atmosphere that keeps the Earth cool when increased radiation isn’t the new variable introduced.
