Global Warming? Antarctica Has Coldest Winter On Record

Antarctica has posted its coldest winter since records began in 1957 with average temperatures of -61.1°C. The previous record was -60.6°C in 1976.

According to a shocked Washington Post:

The chill was exceptional, even for the coldest location on the planet.

The average temperature at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station between April and September, a frigid minus -78 degrees (minus -61 Celsius), was the coldest on record, dating back to 1957. This was 4.5 degrees lower than the most recent 30-year average.

The reason WaPo is shocked, obviously, is because according to the alarmist narrative the polar ice caps are supposed to be getting warmer, not colder.

This may be why the authors of the report tried to disguise the bad news by beginning it thus:

Amid a record hot summer in large parts of the Northern Hemisphere, beset by devastating fires, floods and hurricanes, Antarctica was mired in a deep, deep freeze. That’s typically the case during the southernmost continent’s winter months, but 2021 was different.

In other words, WaPo will only permit its readers to learn that the Antarctic has recorded its coldest winter on record once they have first been reassured that the world is getting hotter (and more generally weather-disastrous).

Later the article goes on to tell readers that ‘The planet and Antarctica are still warming.’

But this claim is contradicted by at least three scientific studies suggesting that the Antarctic is on a cooling trend.

    Hi PSI Readers,

“IT IS OFTEN VERY (MOST) DIFFICULT TO SEE THE OBVIOUS.” (JLK ???)

“There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact” (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)

“It is a capital mistake to theorize before you have all the evidence; to biases the judgment.” (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)

“The temptation to form premature theories upon insufficient data is the bane of our profession.” (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)

Relative to our understanding of weather and the motions of the atmosphere (winds) most scholars did not know of the existence of JET STREAMS until after WWII. Ponder this in the context of Doyle’s quotes. The first of which somewhat contradicts my quote except the next two establishes the absolute need of data (obvious facts).

One of the best kept secrets during WWII was the hydrogen balloons which the Japanese floated across the Pacific Ocean which came down to the earth’s surface in the USA. Clearly, Japanese observers had observed (via clouds) the presence of the atmospheric JET STREAMS over Japan.

Given our knowledge of the existence of these jet streams the USA and the many other governments began atmospheric sounding programs, using a newly developed technology (RADAR) to actually measure the atmospheric pressure at observed altitudes, winds, atmospheric air temperatures, atmospheric dew point temperature, atmospheric relative humidity. Data which did not exist before WWII and is readily available to anyone who has access to the internet (http://weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/sounding.html).

However, the last thing reported for the sounding is “Precipitable water [mm] for entire sounding.” Less than a column is written about this ‘precipitable atmospheric water vapor in C. Donald Ahrens’ popular meteorology textbook Meteorology Today 9th Ed. Since my objective is keep my comments brief, I will only quote 3 sentences.

“Since this amount varies only slightly from day to day, the hydrologic cycle is exceedingly efficient in circulating water in the atmosphere.” And “The signal of the satellites [24 polar-orbiting satellites of the Global Positioning System] send to earth is slowed by the amount of water vapor in the air. Because of this effect the, the GPS can estimate the atmospheric precipitable water vapor … contained i a vertical column of air.”

The precipitable water vapor calculated from fundamental meteorological factors measured during an atmospheric sounding is not an estimate and can vary significantly from one 12 hour sounding to the next and generally from one month to the next and from one season to the next and from a given day of a year to the same day of another year (ECT. ECT.) So I urge readers to specifically look at the sounding data for the South Pole for the present month of October as an example of what can be found at each of the many atmospheric soundings launch sites. But be informed I can only access the South Pole data in the morning at Salem OR.

    Have a good day, Jerry

      Hi PSI Readers,

When I began the previous article I intended to refer the commonly observed fact that clothes dry on the clothes line faster when it it breezy than it is calm. However, more significant, I believet, is that these clothes dry faster when the atmosphere’s relative humidity (RH) is low instead of near 100%.

For Ahrens also wrote: “In all, evaporation and transpiration from continental areas amount to only about 15 percent of the nearly 1.5 billion billion [no mistake] galloons of water vapor that annually evaporates into the atmosphere; the remaining 85 percent evaporates from the oceans.”

While I question this because of what I have learned (observed) from experience. However, as I write this, I also see that few people in developed countries probably now dry their clothes on a clothes line.

      Have a good day, Jerry

    Dear PSI,
The Earth is still in a 2.588-million-year ice age called the Quaternary Glaciation in a warm interglacial period that has happened every 100,000 years for a million years, before that it was every 41,000 years. The warm periods usually last about 10,000 years, this one named the Holocene has lasted 11,700 years.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quaternary_glaciation

The Earth orbits the Sun in an orbit that also depends on Jupiter and Saturn. The Earth’s orbit cycles between a near circle and more of an ellipse over 100,000 years. When the Earth’s orbit gets more circular the Earth has more sunlight, which brings on an interglacial period and warms the Earth but still with permanent ice existing. The warming oceans release CO2 and that warms the Earth even more. That warm period lasts for about 10,000 years. Then the orbit of the Earth starts to get more elliptical, the Earth gets farther from the Sun on average, the Earth gets colder, the oceans absorb more CO2 from the atmosphere, and it gets even colder, which lasts about 90,000 years.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital_eccentricity

Plants or the oceans capture all the CO2 including fossil-fuel CO2 in an average of 4 years according to the IPCC. The plants turn the CO2 into sugar. The animals eat the plants and turn the sugar back into CO2 and exhale it and that is mostly what our CO2 measurements reflect. We have more plants since there is more CO2 as the Earth gets closer to the Sun and more plants mean more animals as well.
https://www.ipcc.ch/site/assets/uploads/2018/03/ipcc_far_wg_I_full_report.pdf page 8 of the report, actual page 56, under 1.2 Carbon Dioxide “The turnover time of CO2 in the atmosphere, measured as the ratio of the content to the fluxes through it, is about 4 years”

As an aside, we have 4.5 million people dying each year from moderately cold weather-related causes, mainly from strokes and heart attacks, while only about 500,000 are dying from heat-related causes and most of them were also from moderate heat. This apparently has been going on for eons but is proportional to the population although in earlier times the proportion was probably higher due to the more primitive technology.
    https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(21)00081-4/fulltext

In this interglacial period, we are still about 6 degrees Celsius colder than the average of the last 500 million years when our biochemistry developed. Biological enzymes are often very sensitive to temperature possibly leading to the strokes and heart attacks.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geologic_temperature_record

The sun is beginning a Grand Solar Minimum where it will produce less output for about 30 years which will reduce the temperature of the earth for that time.
‘Modern Grand Solar Minimum will lead to terrestrial cooling’ https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23328940.2020.1796243

The geologists who have been studying the climate for over 100 years can’t dispute the ‘Climate Change’ movement because the governments through the UN IPCC are promoting the ‘Climate Change’ narrative and the geologists don’t want to lose their main source of funding which is government funding.

    Yours Truly,
    Ralph Gardner
