Why I’m Following the ‘Cave Man’ Diet
Did you know that there is an increasing trend towards moving back to eating more meat and animal fats and fewer carbohydrates? But why – and would it work for you?
While the discredited mainstream in medical science and nutrition has spent the last 50 years telling us to cut out eating ‘harmful’ animal fats we have seen obesity rates sky rocket.
Well, it turns out that turning our backs on natural animal fats in our diets may be one reason why we are sicker and fatter than ever. In her article, ‘Unconventional Nutrition Advice From Sally Fallon Of The Weston A. Price Foundation,’ health and fitness writer writes:
“More and more, people are looking to our ancestors for advice about how to eat and stay healthy, and this applies to the fitness world as well….It always seemed to me that the diet advocated in Nourishing Traditions and by the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF) is particularly well-suited for many athletes. In my own experience eating the foods advocated by WAPF, I have notably higher energy levels than my old diet, which consisted primarily of processed grains, industrial dairy products, legumes, and fruit. It makes sense that a diet rich in foods eaten by our less sedentary ancestors would contribute to healthy energy levels and improved recovery.”
Sally Fallon’s approach is catching on among many of us who are increasingly aware that we have been lied to by ‘the powers that be’ about what really is in our best interests. From climate change to vaccines and nutrition, we have been fed a diet of unpalatable misinformation.
Despite all the so-called advances in modern society, without doubt one thing is certain; in the Twenty-first century we are sicker, less happy and more confused than we were last century.
Now, in my 60’s and having been a semi-serious athlete all my life keeping fit, strong and healthy is a big part of who I am – not least for optimal mental acuity. Fortunate in being blessed with good genes is not enough, training several times a week in the gym and eating the right food, avoiding stress, drinking plenty of water and sleeping well ensures I have the mental and physical stamina to be as vibrant and active today as was the case 30 years ago.
Improving mental acuity by dietary changes
My work in exposing institutional corruption in the sciences has made me very skeptical of government advice on all matters health-related. Being smart about how you live your daily life is also crucial and in that have found that it often pays to consider doing the opposite of what ‘experts’ say.
The paleo diet resembles what human hunter-gatherer ancestors ate thousands of years ago. Although we cannot know exactly what human ancestors ate in different parts of the world, researchers believe their diets consisted of whole foods.
The Paleo Diet — A Beginner’s Guide
By following a whole food-based diet and leading physically active lives, hunter-gatherers presumably had much lower rates of lifestyle diseases, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Macronutrients
Getting a balance in your macro nutrients is important – having fats, proteins and carbs in the right amounts is key. Fallon at WAPF tells us about tweaking our ‘macros’ to best affect:
“Talking about magic ratios – you don’t want more than 20% of calories as protein. 20% is quite appropriate for athletes. 20-30% carbs, and the rest of your diet should be fats. Some people do better on a diet that’s 60-70% fat.”
Yes, you read that right. Up to TWO THIRDS of your diet may be fats – a contradiction to the mainstream narrative of cutting fats to a minimum and replacing them with carbs.
That is a lot of fat. And when Sally Fallon says “fat,” she’s not just talking about guacamole and coconut oil.
When I talk about fat, I’m talking about animal fats. I’m not talking about olive oil. I’m talking about butter, lard, and tallow. The next best fats are coconut oil and unrefined palm oil, and then next, olive oil. I use olive oil on salads so I don’t use a lot, but I mostly use lard. It’s a stable fat and it’s full of vitamin D. But most of the fats you eat should be animal fats.
In traditional cultures, animal fat was a staple diet item, according to Sally, and one of the primary ways they got it was by eating organ meats.
“Traditional cultures were eating these organ meats every day, and not just liver. They were eating brain, and tongue, and kidney, and so forth. We just don’t eat those things. They really valued the fats. There’s this myth that grass-fed animals are lean…Traditional cultures never ate the lean meats – they always ate the meat with the fat.”
Eat More Meat: How Jordan & Mikhaila Peterson Changed their Lives
I follow Professor Jordan Peterson‘s work and know that he and his daughter, Mikhaila, have turned their lives around by following the ‘cave man diet.’ It isn’t crank science in the least. For perhaps genetic reasons, after many years of poor health the Petersons only regained their vitality and well-being after switching to the paleo diet.
Speaking on the Joe Rogan podcast Professor Peterson who he had autoimmune problems his whole life, explains how switching to the cave man diet made him a new man.
“Mikhaila buys plenty of meat fat from the butcher and we fry it up. It really is quite delicious!”
Watch below:
Professor Peterson: “We are eating way too many carbohydrates!”
Of course, modern nutrition advice usually places carbs at the top of the macro triangle, with grains and legumes being the primary carb sources.
Peterson tells Rogan:
“The food pyramid was devised by the department of agriculture not the department of health! We eat way too much corn syrup, we eat way too many carbohydrates!”
Rogan tells Peterson:
“When I read people’s accounts of trying this diet it is almost universally positive… strength gains is a big one.”
Peterson explains that he lost 50 pounds in weight simply by switching to the diet. Rogan confirms that he knew Peterson before the diet and observes he now looks “ripped” and “a lean, mean fighting machine.”
Like the Petersons I’ve found tangible benefits from the switch and saw that the diet is advocated in Nourishing Traditions (author: Sally Fallon) and by the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF). I’m no nutritionist or doctor, but over the course of a longer lifetime you get to see what works and what doesn’t.

I’ve been thinking this for years now. Most of the time our bodies tell us what they want if we listen to them. I find that most things are industry driven rather than health driven. A few years ago we were told gluten was our enemy because some people had an allergy to it so the whole world started going away from wheat products, gluten free started appearing on labels regardless of whether the product had anything to do with gluten or not. Same thing with cholesterol some good some bad but here we will give you statins and all fixed what a joke all this is. Like climate change just follow the money and you will find the truth.

This appealing advice brings to mind a New York Times bestseller of 2014 by Nina Teicholz, “The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet.” A telling cartoon” Two Inuit in an igloo sitting across from each other over an ice block:
“Meat and fat … what else is there to eat?”

A diet chock full of sugar, high fructose corn syrup and refined carbohydrates simply causes havoc on the human body. Metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure…….look around. It sure seems like it’s working great! I mean wow, all the ripped, fit, athletic types all over the place. Carbs rule! (Said no one ever)

Stay away from white food, and life will be long and sweet. The caveman may have eaten a little meat, but I imagine he was eaten more by the wild animals around than he ate them. Two hundred thousand years ago, they probably needed to eat very little. We mostly overeat.
