Patterns of conquest have not been determined solely by technology or even by culture. In general, geography including disease environment has played a major role in the history of conquest as it has in the history of cultural evolution.
The steps of Central Asia and the plains of Eastern Europe have been far better settings for cavalry charges than the mountainous terrain of the Balkans or the heavily forested parts of Central Europe.
