Video: 477-Mile-Long Lighting Bolt Sets New World Record
An enormous lightning bolt that burst forth in the sky over the United States back in 2020 has been named the longest of its kind with an astounding length of 477 miles.
The megaflash’s record-breaking designation was announced by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which studied satellite data to make the lofty determination.
According to a press release from the group, the historic event occurred on April 29th, 2020 as a storm spread across the southern United States.
The tumultuous weather produced a cloud-to-cloud lightning bolt that spanned a staggering 477 miles, which the group noted is “equivalent to the distance between New York City and Columbus, Ohio.”
The megaflash over the United States wasn’t the only remarkable weather moment ‘honored’ by the WMO as they also announced a new record holder for the longest-lasting lightning bolt.
That event took place in June of 2020 during “a thunderstorm over Uruguay and northern Argentina” and lasted a whopping 17.1 seconds.
The two new ‘title holders,’ which the group indicated occurred in “notorious hot spots in North and South America,” bested their predecessors by 37 miles and 0.37 seconds, respectively.
“These are extraordinary records from single lightning flash events,” marveled the WMO’s Professor Randall Cerveny, who mused that “environmental extremes are living measurements of the power of nature.”
He theorized that “it is likely that even greater extremes still exist, and that we will be able to observe them as lightning detection technology improves.”
To that end, the WMO credited “advances in space-based lightning mapping” that have allowed them to obtain precise and detailed measurements of these massive bursts which otherwise wouldn’t be possible with ground-based instruments.

Well now the bullshit is getting deeper. How exactly was this bolt measured? Oh by satellite. They do not exist. So what else do you have? Weather balloons? So one was over the right spot at the right time and 2 identifiable features on the ground below were measured and found to be exactly 477 miles long eh?
This is the kind of nonsense that gets posted here on a supposedly “scientific” website. Sounds like spaceball nonsense to me. How about some real science. That would be nice.

Oh and a 17 second long single bolt of lightning? No way. Just imagine for a moment every last lightning bolt you have seen. Fractions of a second. Maybe 1 to 2 seconds but not likely. But Pricipia full of shitia tells us that a 477 mile long single bolt lasted 17 seconds. Total nonsense.
Oh and Herb you need to get with the program. Even a cave man knows that most everything in this world is a lie including the impossible globe earth lie.

Hi James,
It is interesting that when things with similar shape and density fall, wind resistance (force) causes the larger object to fall slower but when the force is reversed it has less effect on the large hail than on the small hail.

I’m not sure what your point is here, but maybe I can explain that hail is a pretty poor explanation for something that can be 470 miles long, IMO.

Hi James,
The point was that their argument is that lightning is a result of smaller hail having a more negative charge than large hail and the wind carrying the small hail to a greater altitude than the large hail creating different charged area. Since the large hail is more effected by wind (resistance) when falling it should also be carried to the greater altitude and their scenario for lightning is flawed.
