UK ‘Online Safety’ Bill Will Limit Free Speech, create more Censorship

Free speech activists in the UK have warned that new government legislation aimed at social media companies is set to decimate free speech and bring in ‘state-backed censorship’ on an unprecedented scale.
The ‘Online Safety’ Bill is being introduced with the justification of forcing big tech to be more accountable for ‘harmful’ content on their websites.
However, activists have noted that it could be used to remove any opinions and content that big tech or the state do not agree with, and could lead to more publishers being permanently banned from platforms.
The legislation gives the government Office of Communications the power to issue fines of up to £18million or 10 per cent of their annual global turnover if that is higher, and to completely block access to platforms.
Privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch has labelled the legislation “state-backed censorship and monitoring on a scale never seen before in a liberal democracy.”
Another activist group. The Free Speech Union noted that the draft legislation effectively brings media created content on social networks “within scope of a state regulator.”
Another group, The Adam Smith Institute labelled the move “a frightening and historic attack on freedom of speech.”
“The Government should not have the power to instruct private firms to remove legal speech in a free society,” commented Matthew Lesh of the Institute.
‘The scope of these proposals is practically limitless, encompassing everything from ‘trolling’ to ‘fraud’ and ‘misinformation’,” he added.
Lesh further warned that “The vagueness of the legislation means there will be nothing to stop Ofcom and a future government including any additional measures in future.”
Jim Killock, Executive Director of Open Rights Group also weighed in, urging that ‘Treating online speech as inherently dangerous and demanding that risks are eliminated under the threat of massive fines is only going to end up in over-reaction and content removal.”
The legislation is set to be reviewed by a joint committee of MPs, and then brought to Parliament.
The move is yet another example of government using the broad definition of ‘hate speech’ to put into place tools that can be used to silence dissent or opinions it does not want in the public realm.
The legislation was drafted and announced following a sustained campaign involving celebrities and sports personalities who demanded that big tech companies should be held more accountable for instances of racism and bullying on its platforms.

Given that our Prime Minister Jacinda Adern is at the forefront of this drive to take advantage of the tragedy that occurred in Christchurch, we in New Zealand will have to be very active in our opposition to a similar bill which is in the pipeline in our country’s parliament.

Next time all of those payed actors need to move a little faster when the police open the gates and wave them in. I fear that this is the reason YouTube rezzed our accounts on the 10th of May, with a mass influx of emails regarding the Appeals we submitted? Last year of course. They Terminated my account “Roo63” back in October and the second I signed in again, following my now, account “Suspension”, I was hit with my “1st Strike”, for a Vernon Coleman video I Mirrored, dated “31 August 2020” . So I am banned from uploading for my 1st week back. It claims I can Appeal their decision (again), but the Appeal box is labelled “Appeal Rejected” and I have no intention of wasting my time again. I was unsuccessful last time, just like the others I Mirrored. They Really don’t like ol’ Vernon do they? lol I think he hit a nerve or a few? 🙂
I have no intention of uploading to the platform ever again. I just don’t trust them and this stick of a Set-up which I want no part of and, with this New “Online Harms” Bill being pushed, by the Criminals in the British Government etc., I can only guesstimate that YouTube may have rezzed all our Many, “Edited” accounts, Highly Edited in some cases, in order to Terminate them once again in order to prove that they have met their quota, with Video and Channel removals?
Richie “RFB” can’ t even Sign-in to his 2 rezzed accounts on there and “Russianvids” was back with 1 video to his name, last I looked. I expect more Strikes for old material and I may just Terminate the account myself?

One of the major reasons this is happening is because there isn’t enough money on Earth to pay the elite’s financial bill.

It seems almost unbelievable that such a fundamental and well established right as free speech is under serious threat in nations that were once world defenders of the concept. Remember when the US supreme court repeatedly upheld the right of groups such Neo Nazi organizations, klu Klux Klan to demonstrate even though most Americans found these groups abhorrent. Or America First (late 1930s early 40s with Charles Lindberg!) to rally, demonstrate and publish on the Eve of Pearl harbor. Why? because they knew what a quick slippery slope it is to total government control and censorship. I thought the right to free speech would be a “no brainer” by now. When I was young I remember my dad had a saying “people are stupid!” The younger me thought he was so ‘old and cynical’ now I see he was right.

What I mean about the public email is the yellow pages email extraction project. We need to gift real science to the general public in a reader friendly manner. We are doing OK with this project in Australia. We, mainly me cop a lot of hostility from different sources. I remove them from the email template , but I record all their details for possible publication. Then everyone will see the evidence of their vitriol
