The Largest Asteroid Impact On Earth That Smashed Into South Africa

The Vredefort Crater is, to this day, the largest known proven impact site on our planet

A massive asteroid smashed into here a little over 2 billion years ago, and, the land has never been the same since.

As mentioned the Vredefort Crater is the largest known impact site on Earth and while the crater itself has long eroded away, you can’t hide the impact it had on the surrounding rocks.

This event was unimaginable in its scale of destructivity, and the crater itself was estimated to be between 180-300 kilometres across.

If this is true then it means this crater was double the size of the Chicxulub crater which was formed by the collision that we associate with ending the reign of the dinosaurs.

The Vredefort Asteroid was massive and if it hit today we could say goodbye to life as we know it.

It was so large that it is estimated to be one of the largest asteroid to have struck Earth since the Hadean Eon some 4 billion years ago.
