The Hidden Truth About Bone Density – The Myth of Osteoporosis

If you are relying solely on a bone density scan to evaluate the health of your bone or to identify osteopenia or osteoporosis, you are being mislead by the accuracy of DEXA. In this video, Dr. Osborne breaks down bone scan myths.

Osteoporosis is a myth because in 1994 the definition of osteoporosis changed. Before 1994 osteoporosis was considered a disease of the elderly and it was arguably a very rare disease because not a lot of people had it or knew about it. What changed in 1994 was a machine was invested called BMD or bone mineral density scans or some people refer to it as a DEXA machine.

The invention of these machine reclassified the definition of osteoporosis but the problem with these bone mineral density scanners is the data for what bones should look like is based on young women. This means the comparison to people who are older having these scans is unfair as there is going to be a natural decrease in bone growth that happens as we get older.
