Six Decades of Shortwave Radiation

Scientists developed a very high resolution dataset that goes back 6 decades: TerraClimate (Nature link). I will/may be examining their data (with model stuffing) in the next few posts.

The first thing I downloaded was the srad dataset, all 8.4GB of it, from 1958 to 2021.

srad means Shortwave Radiation (to Surface).

Solar Downwelling Radiation – July 2021

I was a little disappointed that it only covers land. No oceans. But let’s see what we can get out of it anyway …

These numbers suggest this is solar downwelling, not Net Solar (minus solar upwelling). Also dissapointed, but will do.

If this data with model filling is true, the ~3 W/m2 difference (~179 minus ~176) over six decades is WAY more than could even be hypothesized by carbon dioxide warming over the last two centuries.

Again we see that the solar shortwave is the dominant force in all the global warming we observed.

P.S. No, I have no idea what happened there in the early 1970s.

    I went to your link and TerraClimate is not measuring any meteorological data. They are using weather station data funded by governments, be they be national, state, or more local. And most of the most and best data is from from automated weather stations during at most the last 4 decades when technology allowed it. However, there is International project which was begun after WWII, the atmospheric sounding project. And knowing something about the atmosphere seems important because that is where weather originates.

    This data is available online at (http://weather.uwyo.edu/upperair/sounding.html) back to 1973. However. I need this to be extended back to 1966 or beyond (which would be better). For there is an observed cyclic phenomena which has a period of 18.6 years which means after 56 near whole years the cycle should be complete and the next one started. And I have seldom read that this cycle might cause cyclic weather. For during the moon’s phase cycle the moon rises from an extreme southerly position on the eastern horizon to an extreme northerly position and back to the southerly position where this cycle begins again during the month’s next phase cycle. However, while the sun rises during a year from one extreme to the other and back to the first. The moon’s extremes move back and forth during a period of about 18.6 years. Which means the extreme position do not occur on the same day of a year until the 4th cycle begins which should be on nearly the same day as of the 1st cycle. So I would like to compare the tides and weather on a given day of the 4th with that of the 1st at various locations where the weather data has been measured on that earlier day.

    Having written this, I finally SEE I could, if I tried, probably compare these old airport records with the recent ones which are already history too. Zoe, I would sure appreciate your help. Or anyone else’s help.

    Hi Zoe,

    You have economical experience. Consider this: Some people do want to do productive work. Like farmers. Extreme weather events create destruction of things which earlier humans have built. So extreme weather events and WARS produce productive jobs for these people who want to be productive. And this is what keeps the economical wheel turning.
