Sea Level Check – Bar Harbor

In this recurring feature from the Climate Discussion Nexus, we check claims of relentless sea level rise against actual data.

Today’s sea level check emergency update takes us to the coast of Maine and the lovely resort town of Bar Harbour. The sea level record goes back to 1947 according to the NOAA website.

The record shows that the sea levels are rising at an annual rate of 2.32 millimetres a year.

Typical science…take a measurement from one area and call it a world wide event.

That’s just what this article did — used one measurement of relative sea level to imply it represented the entire planet.

Is anyone curious about the large discrepancy in sea level measurements around the globe?
Some places show rising sea level, while some show no change, and others show a falling sea level.
Could it be the land is falling in some places? Perhaps, rising in other places?

We know continental drift is greater than sea level changes. Why don’t environmentalists ever discuss the movement of continents and tectonic plates?
