POLL: Most Global Warming ‘Believers’ Still Eat Lots Of Red Meat

A YouGov poll released Monday found that while 57 percent of American adults believe in global warming, most have done little to eat less red meat and use fewer fossil fuels.

YouGov found that “13{154653b9ea5f83bbbf00f55de12e21cba2da5b4b158a426ee0e27ae0c1b44117} of climate change believers said they’ve greatly reduced their consumption of red meat, and 17{154653b9ea5f83bbbf00f55de12e21cba2da5b4b158a426ee0e27ae0c1b44117} said they’ve reduced a little,” but “66{154653b9ea5f83bbbf00f55de12e21cba2da5b4b158a426ee0e27ae0c1b44117} haven’t changed their habits at all.” Six percent say they actually eat more red meat.

As for fossil fuels, 9 percent have significantly decreased their usage, but 54 percent have not altered their consumption. Fifteen percent of climate-conscious adults increased their fossil fuel use. YouGov polled about 1,000 U.S. adults.

Scientists blame fossil fuels and livestock farming for increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases. Activists have spent years lobbying for anti-fossil fuels policies and bringing legal actions against pipelines and other projects.

Environmentalists have increasingly set their sights on changing the American diet to fight global warming, specifically targeting red meat. The United Nations even suggested replacing red meat with insects as a source of protein.

A slight majority of Americans who believe in global did report increasing “how much they recycle and practice sustainable waste management habits, like composting or reusing, since hearing about climate change,” according to the poll.
