Pirola Panic
In this video, Dr. John Campbell is discussing the brewing Pirola panic. Pirola, BA.2.86, was originally an asteroid that hangs out by Jupiter but the World Health Organization, have named BA.2.86 a “variant under monitoring”.
First monitoring began on 14 August 2023, and through (horizon scanning) 34 amino acid differences were compared with BA.2. All in spike protein, these 36 amino acid changes compared with the 2023 circulating XBB.1.5
This number of genetic differences, is roughly of the same magnitude as seen between the initial Omicron variant (BA.1) and previous variants, such as Delta (B.1.617.2). Pirola was declared a variant on 18 August 2023 and in the week beginning 28 August 2023, 2 UK sequences found.
