New symptomless Covid strain ‘more infectious than Delta’

A new strain of Covid-19, which is being described as more infectious than the Delta variant of the virus, is now under investigation by scientists.

The newly detected strain, which has been called AY.4.2, has subsequently been classified by officials as a “variant under investigation”.

According to reports, 11.8 per cent of infections in England from mid-October to early November are connected to the AY.4.2 mutation.

People with the latest variant are said to be more likely to be asymptomatic compared to other Covid variants, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

Only a third of people with the AY.4.2 mutation have had Covid symptoms of a new continuous cough, loss of taste and/or smell, and a high temperature.

In comparison, 46 percent of patients with the Delta variant have shown typical symptoms.

Scientists say that forms of the AY.4 variant, including the latest one AY.4.2, are the most likely to cause a patient to be asymptomatic.

In October, 63 percent of cases were a form of the AY.4 mutation.

Christl Donnelly, professor of statistical epidemiology at Imperial College London, believes the new strain is more infectious than the common Delta variant.

He said: “It is absolutely the case that if people are waiting for symptoms to do a test and to therefore identify that they are infected, and therefore cut back their contacts, being asymptomatic may facilitate transmission for example.

“It is an asymptomatic transmission that really can make the difference between what’s relatively easily containable and what needs vaccination.”

Locally, the latest government figures show that Luton has one of the lowest Covid vaccination rates in the UK outside of London with just 66.4 percent of adults in Luton have received their first dose.

Most of Bedfordshire is currently sitting below or above the national average of 400 cases per 100,000 people, except for these three Bedfordshire villages.

Editor’s note: Perhaps Christl Donnelly is unaware of the three studies that show asymptomatic transmission is essentially a myth

Hello people and other readers of PSI!
The “Variant under investigation” had its name (I presume) intentionally polluted by a decimal point!!!
Please note that any subsequent variants will be so infectious, someone just hearing from someone else who read/watched the news about it will be instantly infected; there will be no symptoms as this illness works its deadly way through other pathways (e.g. injections).
    BEWARE!
    Cheers, JaKo
