My New Book: Follow The Science
Regarding my original CBS News investigation on antiperspirants and breast cancer: When I first ask the cosmetics and antiperspirant industry for an interview, representatives refer me to the American Cancer Society for assurances that antiperspirants can’t cause cancer.
I find that a little strange. Indeed, when I contact the American Cancer Society, the director of content, Dr. Ted Gansler, is quick to rule out a breast cancer link. But when I ask him about studies to the contrary, I’m shocked to learn that he’s unfamiliar with them.
He asks me to fax him the studies. Once he has the scientific evidence in hand, instead of addressing it, he deflects. He answers each question I ask about breast cancer risk by repeating that women would be better off getting mammograms than worrying about other “small risks” like antiperspirants.
Why would the American Cancer Society be giving definitive opinions debunking the link when their experts were unfamiliar with the relevant science?
Why do they keep talking about mammograms instead of the question at hand?
