How a ‘Settled Science’ Experiment Backfired to Discredit Global Warming Theory

As President Trump leads the war against the ‘hoax’ of man-made global warming, yet another independent study comes to his aid. This time fakery is exposed around a simple and well-publicized university experiment long claimed to prove the ‘settled science’ of alarmist climate academics.

Australian, Ross McLeod, pinpoints hard evidence from a laboratory experiment to expose a key claim of government climate scientists (an infant discipline). McLeod, like others, has long been sceptical of how carbon dioxide (CO2) – a gas used worldwide in industry for more than a century for refrigeration and cooling – somehow acquired ‘heat trapping’ properties in the zany world of climate science.

Applied scientists and industry experts have been seriously bemused by a veritable scientific flip-flop in the computer-models of university theoreticians. Applied scientists, unlike academics, are trained to use gases safely and efficiently to perform everyday tasks. For over a hundred years carbon dioxide has done nothing other than keep things cool (ever heard of dry ice?). Never, ever has CO2 been shown to warm anything. That’s McLeod’s world – that of the tried and tested. To McLeod it seemed the make-believe, alternative reality of computer models had hijacked this otherwise benign, useful coolant gas and transformed it – at least, in the minds of politicians and the scientifically illiterate – into the planet’s deadliest ‘heat trapping’ gas. So, what gives?

A perplexed McLeod decided to put the extraordinary claims under the microscope. To a ‘hands on’ guy like McLeod no proof is better than real time, physical testing of how gases behave when heated. He and most people would take that all day long over any guesstimated academical computer printout. So, that is what his study did – robustly tested one of the most widely hyped experiments that climate scientists say ‘proves’ their greenhouse gas theory (GHE). McLeod says if he can do, you can do it, too, using everyday household lamps and a thermometer.

McLeod’s study, detailed in his paper ‘Is a Back Radiation Greenhouse Effect of 33 Kelvin Possible?’ (2017, revised), carefully follows the simple experiment set out by the University of Washington (UoW) online lecture notes. Their version is one of the most cited explaining the greenhouse gas theory (the cornerstone of man-made global warming).

The UoW model explains that the resultant (calculated number) for atmospheric “back radiation” has heating power EQUAL to the sun’s radiation. To applied scientists this claim is pure nonsense.

The Experiment to Debunk the Greenhouse Effect

Let’s be clear. McLeod performs the very same experiment relied upon by the global warming researchers themselves. From it they claim they merely apply the numbers to their computer codes. But as anyone who performs the experiment at home will find, the experiment discredits the very claims made in the Washington University lecture.

McLeod writes:

“The results are unequivocal and contradict the claim shown in the University lecture and all of the simple models of the “greenhouse effect.” I placed a simple thermometer on a simple stand. I placed some black tape over the bulb of the thermometer. I used the thermometer to record the temperature each light could induce on its own. I placed a clock next to the thermometer to record time. I placed each light individually in various positions until I was able to achieve a temperature response as shown by the thermometer. I allowed significant time until it appeared no further increase in temperature occurred….

…I performed several experiments over a period of a week and the fundamental principle is verified every time. I invite anyone to try this. Whilst not as dramatic as heating a light bulb with mirrors or other similar flawed experiments it provides a real effect that is verifiable, provides real data, and is based on simple sound scientific principles.”

McLeod then explains why climate scientists perform their mathematical gymnastics. He shows how their application is “ridiculous” and “demonstrates the fundamental flaw inherent in using simple algebra involving the Stefan-Boltzmann equation.”

Bottom Line: This ‘settled science’ standard experiment is nothing of the sort; it doesn’t prove that CO2 ‘traps heat’ or ‘back radiates’ heat to make our planet warmer. Applied scientists, chemical and refrigeration engineers can sleep soundly in their beds safe in the knowledge that it is not they who have erred, rather that government climate researchers haven’t learned how to properly perform experiments.
