Even Higher Electricity Bills Looming For The UK

On October 22nd, The Telegraph reported UK electricity bills will change repeatedly by the hour

The article says, in part:

Millions of homes will see their electricity bills change with the weather after E.On announced plans to charge customers by the half hour.

German-owned E.On will begin taking electricity meter readings from customers every 30 minutes, instead of monthly as happens now.

Under the scheme, households will see electricity prices vary throughout the day. Prices will be partly linked to the levels of wind and sunshine available to power renewable generators, as well as overall demand.

For example, power prices could rise sharply on cold, windless winter evenings when wind and solar generation plummets and demand surges.

Full story here.

As many of the Telegraph commenters point out, when you need energy most, you will have to pay through the neck for it.

Remember that even when wholesale prices are low when electricity supply is plentiful, billpayers won’t see any benefit, because wind and solar farms will still get paid their guaranteed prices.

But the ability to charge high prices when supply is tight is deliberately designed to cut demand in order to avoid blackouts.

In other words, rationing by price.

As Claire Coutinho correctly points out:

Ed Miliband’s obsession with net zero will make Britain depend on the weather for its electricity. It means millions of homes will have to change their energy use, not when they want to, but when the wind is blowing.”

As an aside, the Telegraph included this graph:

It totally destroys the myth that electricity prices are high because of gas.

In real terms, gas bills are not high at all historically, and stand at similar levels to a decade ago, something I have been reporting on.

In stark contrast, electricity prices are up by about a third compared to a decade ago, with bills rising fast ever since 2017.

It is no coincidence that this period coincides with the explosion in ‘renewable’ subsidies.
