Do Surgeons Need Masks?

Why do surgeons and operating room staff need to wear masks? In this video, Dr. Moran explains the history about why surgeons started wearing surgical masks, what they are good for, and what a few of the medical opinions about masking in the operating room are today.

There have been studies done with masked and unmasked operating room staff and Dr. Moran addresses these later in the video. Historically, there are two main reasons why surgeons wear masks, the first was to reduce bacteria and saliva from the mouth contaminating the surgical field and the second was to protect the operating staff from any bodily fluids.

There are different risks to the surgeon and surgical assistant standing next to the patient compared to others in the room. In reality, very few people within the operating room are scrubbed, meaning have washed their hands and wear sterile equipment. Many people ask if any person within the operating room actually needs to wear a mask and the simple answer is that we don’t know.
