CO2: More Important to Biology than to Climate
Over at the influential blog, climatechangedispatch.com Barry Bateman offers a superb comment on John Stossel’s review of the film, ‘The Climate Hustle.’ Bateman writes as follows:
“So the first question we want to ask is suppose there was no CO2, no greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. What would happen?”
And the first answer should be that without CO2, all life would be dead – that is 200 year old biology. The CO2 “fertilization effect” is an understatement. It is only appropriate for the range of increased CO2 used in greenhouses. (up to 1600ppm, which produces the strongest, healthiest, most beautiful and productive plants) Cyanobacteria took one or two billion years to create ANY free O2, let alone our current 20%.
All of the first O2 had to oxidate (rust) all of earth’s surface iron before any free O2 could form. ALL life’s energy and all our atmosphere’s oxygen comes through photosynthesis: sunlight plus CO2 + water gives sugar + O2.
CO2 is FAR MORE IMPORTANT TO BIOLOGY THAN IT IS TO CLIMATE. The sugar produced by photosynthesis provides ALL OF THE ENERGY REQUIRED FOR LIFE ON EARTH – MAKING CO2 along with water THE BASIC INGREDIENTS FOR ALL LIFE ON EARTH.
WHILE CO2 CONCENTRATIONS HAVE BEEN DECLINING FROM CONCENTRATIONS TEN TO TWENTY TIMES THAT OF TODAY’S AT THE BEGINNING OF MULTICELLULAR EVOLUTION NEARLY 600 MILLION YEARS AGO. DECLINING TO TODAY’S NEAR LETHAL LOWS (all life begins to die at CO2 levels of 100-150ppm).
During glacial phases of our ongoing Pleistocene/Holocene ice age, CO2 concentrations drop to within 30ppm of lethal lows. That is because CO2 dissolves MORE AS TEMPERATURES DROP.
And CO2 outgasses from water as temperatures rise increasing atmospheric CO2. The natural relationship is temperature CAUSING CO2 concentration changes (CO2 lags by about 800 years) – not the reverse. And making the 180-280ppm natural range of CO2 during our ongoing Pleistocene/Holocene ice age the COLDEST (and nearest to lethal) RANGE THAT EARTH HAS EVER ENDURED during multicellular evolution.
Far too close to lethally LOW LEVELS OF CO2. While EVERY MEASURE OF CLIMATIC TEMPERATURE REMAINS WELL WITHIN NATURAL RANGES. Well within the one thousand year Eddy cycle’s 4 degree C range which bottomed out in the 16th century and which will top out after warming another 2 degrees C naturally. Well within the natural variations of our current ongoing Holocene twelve thousand year interglacial.
And well within our current ongoing Pleistocene/Holocene ongoing ice age – three million years so far – the coldest the earth has ever endured.
And since the climate remains well within its natural temperature ranges of the last three million years, in spite of CO2 levels not seen in twelve million years. The 41% increase in CO2 since the mid-twentieth century has been nothing but a Godsend to life on earth – and insignificant to climate.

The United States’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2017 was $19,390,000,000,000 (trillion). Battery storage to replace the strategic petroleum reserve would cost more than 100,000 GDPs!

Climate change mechanics conspires to do away with the physics of the atmosphere, where action and reaction is abandoned. When a new gas molecule is introduced into the dense troposphere, dislocation takes place, where if the new molecule is denser than the atmosphere (contains less heat energy), such as carbon dioxide, the gas molecule sinks displacing upwards the warmer nitrogen and oxygen molecules, thereby cooling the area of dislocation. Conversely, if the new gas molecule has more heat energy than the nitrogen-oxygen based atmosphere (such as methane), the new molecule rises, displacing relatively cooler nitrogen and oxygen molecules downwards, which displaces upwards relatively more heat retaining nitrogen and oxygen molecules, thereby cooling the area of dislocation. Thermodynamics in action in the atmosphere that keeps the Earth cool when increased radiation isn’t the new variable introduced.

I NEVER READ OR HEARD PEOPLE DISCOURSING ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE EVER MENTIONED HENRY’S LAW, WHICH STATES THAT: “The amount of dissolved gas in a liquid is proportional to its partial pressure above the liquid. The proportionality factor is called Henry’s law constant.” I am a Chemical Engineer. Stefan-Boltzman equation, Calusius-Clayperon equation, ideal gas law, Henry’s law, the four laws of thermodynamics which are all involved in governing the “balancing act” of weather and climate, are all part of our board exam. If only people look into these real sciences instead of climate change politics, there would be no more discussion on climate change. It would be 100% consensus that the essential-for-life-to-exist CO2 gas has nothing to do with changing climate. Consensus is not even part of real science. You, see lots of people nowadays seek refuge in the word according to science. But they don’t know that their science is actually superstition. Even a single engineer or scientists who can show that what is hypothesize is proven by actual observation and experiment can prevail over trillions of scientists who says or claims otherwise. Climate change is a natural phenomenon, a kind of balancing act of nature to maintain equilibrium. You may watch my video in YouTube titled “How Nature Produces The Oxygen We Breathe” and “How Trees Produce Water”. Trees produce a lot of CO2 during photorespiration and cellular respiration. That is why, only 28% of oxygen supply to the atmosphere to maintain the equilibrium concentration at 20.984% is produced by rain forest or terrestrial plants. About 70% is contributed by tiny plants called phytoplanktons in the oceans. The 2% is due to photolysis of water vapor by sunlight in the atmosphere. When the experiment of RIPE and UN-IPCC increased the CO2 concentration to 450 ppm from the prevailing 400 ppm 5 years ago, photorespiration decreased from 31% to 25%, which means more oxygen was produced by plants/trees and less of CO2. Further to 1,000 ppm CO2, the photorespiration was further reduced to 14%. Which, again, means much more O2 net produced and correspondingly less CO2 as co-product. You see photorespiration and cellular respiration is the reverse reaction of photosynthesis. And people who claim to be scientists refuse to look at it that way. It’s like ignoring that there is a law of gravity.

Hi Melanchthon,
Trees do not produce water. Photosynthesis is CO2 + H2O + Energy -> CH + O. It is water that provides the hydrogen for creating hydrocarbons and when hydrocarbons are oxidized they return to water, carbon dioxide, and energy.

Plants do give off water during respiration.
Cellular Respiration: C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
Photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6+ 6O2

You obviously are new to PSI as Robert Beaty frequenting refers to Henry’s Law.
But to the ‘heart’ of your comment, you wrote: “Even a single engineer or scientists who can show that what is hypothesize is proven by actual observation and experiment can prevail over trillions of scientists who says or claims otherwise.”
I wish what you wrote did not take so long. I assume you are aware of Galileo’s struggles. You not mention the hypothesis known as the greenhouse effect of atmospheric carbon dioxide which I believe you might accept is the ‘scientific’ basis of chemic change. And I have written that the prediction of this greenhouse effect is that the atmospheric air temperature (actually the earth’s surface temperate but for discussion purposes I accept it is okay to the commonly measured air temperature as a proxy for the surface temperature) would be about 33C lower if not for the atmospheric carbon dioxide and other greenhouse atmospheric gases.
Consider this scientific law (which has not yet been recognized by maybe you) as being a scientific law. The air temperature has never been measured to be lower than the same atmosphere’s measured dew point temperature. So it is the atmosphere’s dew point (water vapor) which limits the minimum temperature and this has nothing to do with the observed fact that water molecules are a greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide is.
Can you agree with this observation which I just brought to your attention about which you did not write? But, thank you for giving an opportunity to write again here at PSI what I had previously written more than once without seeming convincing anyone about the importance of this scientific law which most seem not ready to accept that it exists or have knowledge about the previous importance of previous scientific laws.

Nitrogen and oxygen constitute, by volume, 99.03% of the atmosphere’s gasses, while the trace gases account for 0.97%, or just under 1% of the atmosphere’s gasses. If we include water vapor (H2O) in the atmosphere, which accounts for, on average, 2% of the atmosphere’s gases by volume, we therefore subtract this 2% from the atmosphere’s gasses, where nitrogen and oxygen will constitute 97.0494%, and the trace gasses will constitute 0.9506%.
Nitrogen and oxygen don’t absorb much infrared radiation (IR) emitted from the ground, and assuming they absorb 100% of thermal energy from the surface, constituting approximately 5% of Earth’s energy budget, we’re left with a massive energy deficit for nitrogen and oxygen, confirming that those two molecules derive their energy from thermal ground/ocean emissions instead, but since the ‘climate change’ narrative identifies such emissions as not thermal but IR, we have proof that the energy being emitted isn’t IR but thermal because nitrogen and oxygen absorb a miniscule amount of IR.
We’re told that Nitrogen and oxygen obtain 5.1% of their heat energy from thermal energy emanating from the surface…

Since nitrogen and oxygen constitute by volume 97.0494% of the atmosphere’s gasses (when water vapor is included in the calculations making for a more precise calculation), they must therefore retain that volume amount of heat energy, but 18.4 Wm2 only constitutes 5.1% of the Earth’s Energy Budget of 358.2 Wm2. Nitrogen and oxygen’s absorption of infrared radiation would only infinitesimally affect this missing heat energy.
The missing energy levels for nitrogen and oxygen direct our attention to another aspect of the scientific fraud taking place: Misidentified outgoing energy types. IR is assigned an energy magnitude of 358.2 Wm2, and thermals 18.4 Wm2. The opposite is closer to the truth, where IR is assigned 18.4 Wm2, and thermals 358.2 Wm2.

If we pretend that everything that they say about CO2 heating up the atmosphere is correct then using their experiment, the 2 bottles experiment, the most that the CO2 could be responsible for heating up the atmosphere to is about 0.08C. That’s it.

It is my contention that up/down welling, trapped/”back” radiated GHG looping power flux, W/m^2, is allegedly “measured” because the users don’t understand that pyrgeometers use thermocouples/thermopiles to measure temperatures and do not measure power flux directly.
Power flux is inferred by applying the S-B equation to those measured temperatures and ASSUMING BB or 1.0 emissivity.
As I demonstrated in my experiments this assumption about radiation and BB is incorrect.
Because of the contiguous participating media, i.e. atmospheric molecules contributing non-radiative heat transfer, radiation does not function independently but in concert with the non-radiative processes and as such CANNOT function as a BB surface with 1.0 emissivity.
