Benefits of Ozone on Mortality in Patients with COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

I attended an integrative medicine meeting recently and one of the speakers said that ozone was one of the most important tools in his practice.

While this is a very broad topic with > 4000 papers listed in the National Library of Medicine with the MESH term “ozone therapy,” Hu et al briefly summarized:

“Ozone is a molecule composed of three oxygen atoms and a component of the atmosphere in nature, which has a strong oxidizing action. Ozone has a high-energy, variable molecular structure under normal temperature and is quickly and spontaneously decomposed into O2 and a single oxygen atom (O).

It has strong activity in oxidation and a strong bactericidal effect on bacteria and viruses.10,11 Ozone therapy inactivates bacteria by disrupting their cell envelope through oxidation of phospholipids and lipoproteins, inhibits fungi growth, damages the capsid of viruses, and upsets the reproductive cycle by disrupting the virus-to-cell contact with peroxidation.

12 Oxygen-ozone therapy causes an increase in the rate of red blood cell glycolysis, causing the stimulation of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate, which leads to an increase in oxygen released to the tissues.13

Innovative physicians, from many parts of the world trialed ozone in hospitalized patients some of whom had 4-6 weeks in the hospital with acute COVID-19. Shang et al performed a meta-analysis of very small studies:

    Ah, ozone, the additional ozone in the air after a thunderstorm makes the air feel clean and fresh.
    Part of the Bob Beck protocol (for health and healing) uses Ozonated Water to help with healing. It has been used in various methods since the 1980’s and earlier. check out BobBeck.com as one example.

    Ozone is used today to sterilize bottled water sold in stores.
    Warning, high levels of ozone from ozone generators in the air is corrosive and can damage lung tissue. Like anything else too much of a good thing is bad for you,

      Hi Steve,
      Your are correct that it is not ozone, which is the sharp smell after electric arcing but I don’t buy the Petrichor either.
      The fresh smells occurs in cities and fields after a descent amount of rain, not a sprinkle. A city is covered by concrete that has been flushed by the rain and a field is throughly wet with everything waterlogged and not becoming aersoles. In my opinion the smells from all the particles that were in the air having been removed by the rain and the stuffy smell from CO2 (high solubility) has also has been removed as it was absorbed by the liquid water.

        Hi guys. I didn’t know about the Petrichor, so thank you for that information, but I am not sure. I checked several sites with various results.
        This one from the CBC

        also makes sense to me, as after a storm with active lightning, you can actually smell the ozone, which is different that the smell of the air after the rain has stopped, so the Petrichor could be a viable explanation for that.

        About Ozone for medical purposes, I forgot about Hydrogen Peroxide (which is H2O2 – water with an extra oxygen, like Ozone, which is 03, both of which release the extra oxygen for burning(oxidizing) germs, virus’, tissue, just like using oxyacetylene to cut through steel – powerful stuff, with a lot of history.
