Autopsy of Star Matthew Perry Reveals Long History Of Drug Abuse
I thought of this harsh pronouncement by the Russian ex-pat author, Vladimir Nabokov, when I read the LA County Medical Examiner’s autopsy report for Matthew Langford Perry.
Drug addicts, especially young ones, are conformists flocking together in sticky groups … nor is there anything more philistine, more bourgeois, more ovine than this business of drug duncery.
Half a century ago, a similar fashion among the smart set of St. Petersburg was cocaine sniffing combined with phony orientalities.
The better and brighter minds of my young American readers are far removed from those juvenile fads and faddists.
I also used to know in the past a Communist agent who got so involved in trying to wreck anti-Bolshevist groups by distributing drugs among them that he became an addict himself and lapsed into a dreamy state of commendable metempsychic sloth.
Toxicology revealed that his body contained significant amounts of the opioid substitutes buprenorphine and ketamine. The autopsy also revealed extensive organ damage from a lifetime of drug abuse.
We live in a permissive culture with large reserves of tolerance and sympathy for talented celebrities like Matthew Perry who struggle with drug addiction. I believe this is a terrible mistake and that the proper attitude to recreational drug use is the withering contempt expressed by Vladimir Nabokov.
Why so harsh and unforgiving? Because young people MUST be educated to understand that there is nothing cool, groovy, hip, amusing, charming, or even remotely forgivable about using drugs.
Without equivocation, young people must be equipped with the stark and vivid understanding that drug addicts are contemptible, pathetic fools who destroy their minds and bodies, cause unrelenting sorrow for those who care about them, burden our society and cities, and finance the most cruel and ruthless criminal syndicates in history.
As the British journalist Peter Hitchens stated in a debate with Matthew Perry on the BBC ten years ago:
It doesn’t do anybody any favors to try to be nice to drug-takers.
If you want to stop people from becoming drug users, then the best thing to do is to make sure they never start in the first place.
Matthew Perry had it all—talent, wit, charm, intelligence, and good looks. He could have done great things with his life well beyond his extraordinary youthful success with Friends.
Instead, he rationalized being a Drug Dunce by adopting the attitude that there was nothing he could do about it.

Drug abuse, no matter if it is legal or not, equals abuse of the body. Not shedding any tears for this guy.
