In 1825, Egyptologists excavated tomb KV9 in Eastern Egypt, the resting place of Pharaoh Ramesses V, who died nearly 3000 years ago.
Later analysis of Ramesses’ mummified remains determined that he had died of smallpox – the earliest known case of the disease.
In the three millennia after Ramesses’ death, smallpox would take the lives of billions of people, from mighty Kings and Queens, to writers, scientists and to the common people.
