Old Farmer’s Almanac Predicts ‘Winter Wonderland’ Of Snow

As you prepare for fall it might be a good idea to also dig out not only your rake but also your snow shovel

According to the winter weather forecast for 2023-24 released today by the Old Farmer’s Almanac, we will need the shovels early.

“‘The 2024 Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts snow, seasonable cold, and all of winter’s delights! This winter’s forecast is sure to excite snow bunnies and sweater lovers alike, promising a whole lot of cold and snow across North America!”

The almanac, which said it has been issuing 80 percent-accurate forecasts since 1792, is calling for a “winter wonderland” with “crisp temperatures and oodles of fluffy white” in areas of the United States that typically see snow – including the Northeast.

In the Northeast and Midwest, the almanac predicts “snow will arrive beginning in November, with storms, showers, and flurries continuing through the start of spring.”

Pennsylvania is solidly within the almanac’s map for “cold and snowy” weather.

While it says “winter will be warmer than normal from New England the Atlantic corridor down to Florida …” it also says, “Snowfall will be above normal across the most snow-prone areas …”

The almanac said an:

“…expected El Niño has emerged and should gradually strengthen into the winter. El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon marked by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean.

Typically, El Niño conditions result in wetter-than-average conditions from southern California to along the Gulf Coast and drier-than-average conditions in the Pacific Northwest.

We also expect a warm Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and cool Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Also important are the equatorial stratospheric winds involved in the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, or QBO.

Under certain combinations of meteorological conditions, the polar vortex can be displaced from the North Pole, which could open the door for cold blasts to hit southern Canada and the central and eastern United States during this upcoming winter.”

The Old Farmer’s Almanac forecast comes just a few weeks after the Farmer’s Almanac forecast that predicts the Northeast, from Washington to Boston, which had a light amount of precipitation this past winter, may experience for “quite the opposite, with lots of rain/sleet and snowstorms to contend with.”

In CA, the ground squirrels have been extra fat, it’s not normal this early. I think we’re going to get wet and cold. Maybe we can wash the Newscum out to the ocean.

    For those keeping score:
Old Farmer’s Almanac – 80% accurate in predictions.
UN IPCC – 0% accurate in predictions.
