Warning: Lab tests show your hand sanitizer may be carcinogenic

Dozens of every day consumer hand sanitizers contain elevated levels of a hidden chemical carcinogen. Valisure is an independent pharmacy and lab that tests drug products and discovered this disturbing fact.

Dozens of hand sanitizers on the market in the US and other countries have been proven by lab tests to contain the dangerous chemical, benzene, known to cause cancers.

Valisure tested 260 bottles from 168 brands and found 17 percent contained detectable levels of benzene. And 21 bottles (8 percent of the samples) contained benzene above two parts per million (ppm), a temporary limit the FDA set for liquid hand sanitizers to alleviate the supply shortage during the pandemic.

Benzene is a colorless and highly flammable liquid with a sweet smell, and is partially responsible for the smell around petrol (gasoline) stations.

Wikipedia tells us:

Health effects

Benzene is classified as a carcinogen, which increases the risk of cancer and other illnesses, and is also a notorious cause of bone marrow failure. Substantial quantities of epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory data link benzene to aplastic anemia, acute leukemia, bone marrow abnormalities and cardiovascular disease.[66][67][68] The specific hematologic malignancies that benzene is associated with include: acute myeloid leukemia (AML), aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).[69]

The American Petroleum Institute (API) stated in 1948 that “it is generally considered that the only absolutely safe concentration for benzene is zero”.[70]

There is no safe exposure level; even tiny amounts can cause harm.[71] The US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) classifies benzene as a human carcinogen.

Long-term exposure to excessive levels of benzene in the air causes leukemia, a potentially fatal cancer of the blood-forming organs. In particular, acute myeloid leukemia or acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (AML & ANLL) is not disputed to be caused by benzene.[72] IARC rated benzene as “known to be carcinogenic to humans” (Group 1).

Benzene is a non polar substance and, being a six-membered, conjugated, flat molecule. It tends to cause liver cancer. Being a flat molecule, it can intercalate into DNA, thus changing DNA base pair spacing and fostering mistakes during cell replication. It is by no means assured that low concentrations of benzene will cause cancer—just as smoking only increases your risk but does not ensure cancer.

My doctoral mentor, a delightful Australian lipid chemist from Perth, spent about two years in his early studies working in a closed room in which extractions were being done with benzene. In my work, I was exposed repeatedly to doses in my studies. Nothing so far.

As I taught my students for many years, the toxicity is in the dose. Our immune systems are good at detecting and quashing aberrant cells, but can miss some if there are too many.
