A lot of scientists were self-funded or they were funded by individuals who didn’t have this particular stake in the outcome of their work. They were more interested in the prestige of having funded someone rather than a specific outcome. Nowadays it’s not just about finding consensus between scientists, it’s about finding consensus between the scientific community and the political community, which means that science turns from being a search for truth to being a search for funding.
Joe:
Yeah, so it becomes a sort of self-expanding Bureaucracy exponentially self-expanding bureaucracy that simply never ends. It’s an opinion management bureaucracy. It’s not about science anymore. Some science might accidentally occur within that sphere but that’s no longer the primary objective. And and this is because the government policy dictates funding and funding dictates the science, which then dictates government policy again. And so you have this feedback loop.
Noah: The idea that they had throughout most of western culture is maybe he’s crazy but let’s hear his idea out and then we’ll tear it up if it’s bad we’ll tear into it um but maybe he’s right and he has something to teach us.
Joe: It requires a mutually understood desire for truth. So, what happens when that no longer exists.
Noah: And especially what changed . . .
Noah is asking the right question. What changed? I know the answer to this question. The answer is the extremely low cost of dissemination of scientific information.
The masses are the dominant constituent of all truth, including scientific truth. And the masses are simply overwhelmed by the quantity of truth coming from the sciences. Consequently, the masses have formed emotional attachments to dumbed down models, which, consequently, are the only models that have a chance of being funded. A consensus of dunces now dictates the flow of all scientific funding. And it all stems from one factor: the low cost of dissemination of scientific information has killed traditional religion and turned traditional science into a religion.
Humans are not truth monkeys we are consensus monkeys. There is no conspiracy. There is no communist or capitalist plot. There is just the fact that collectively human are morons. We believe stupid shit. And we believe stupid shit very deeply.
As an example of how difficult it is to change the mind of somebody that has accepted something stupid, consider that it has been explained to Postma over and over again that heat moves in all direction from all objects constantly. ALL TEXTBOOKS ON THERMODYNAMICS CONCUR ON THIS POINT. It is only heating (increase in temperature) that only moves from hotter objects to colder objects. Yet Postma continues professing this plainly nonscientific assertion.
Everything else Postma says on thermodynamics is perfectly accurate. However, like the rest of humanity, he is clueless about the physics of storms (ie. Meteorology).
