Pandemic Scandal: EU President is Married to Top Vaccine Insider

BRUSSELS — The European Commission is facing a renewed storm of scrutiny as Romanian MEP Cristian-Vasile Terheș and several parliamentary colleagues demand the immediate resignation of President Ursula von der Leyen. The calls for her departure center on allegations of “crony capitalist nepotism” regarding the EU’s multi-billion-euro vaccine contracts and the professional ties of her husband, Dr. Heiko von der Leyen.

The “Pfizergate” Allegations

The controversy, frequently dubbed “Pfizergate,” stems from a massive agreement the EU signed to secure up to 4.6 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines—roughly 10 doses for every EU citizen—at an estimated cost of €71 billion.

The focal point of the current outrage is the perceived lack of transparency regarding:

• The Text Messages: It was revealed that President von der Leyen personally negotiated parts of the deal with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla via text messages. The Commission has since stated it cannot find these messages, leading to a “maladministration” finding by the European Ombudsman.

• The Husband’s Role: Dr. Heiko von der Leyen serves as the Medical Director of Orgenesis, a U.S.-based biotech firm specializing in cell and gene therapies.

MEP Cristian-Vasile Terheș has led a vocal campaign, arguing that these connections create an unacceptable appearance of a conflict of interest. Terheș stated that the President “must immediately and unconditionally resign,” suggesting the motives of EU planners were driven by corporate interests rather than public health.

In the case of the pandemic, critics argue that if the public had been fully aware of the private negotiations and the professional background of the President’s family, the “conception about the motives of EU and governmental planners” would have been scrutinized much earlier.

The Accountability Battle

The European Court of Justice recently ruled that the Commission was wrong to restrict access to the vaccine contracts, criticizing the “partial” refusal to disclose details of the negotiating team.

For MEPs like Terheș, the issue is not just about the money—it is about the erosion of democratic oversight. “We asked to see the COVID contracts in their full and unredacted version, and we were denied access,” Terheș said during a plenary session.

As legal challenges from The New York Times and various European watchdog groups continue, the pressure on the Berlaymont building remains at an all-time high, with the “text message” saga serving as a catalyst for a broader debate on EU transparency and executive power.
