GB Energy boss silent on when Labour will cut bills by £300

The boss of GB Energy dodged answering today when Labour’s ‘Net Zero’ drive could meet the promise of cutting bills by £300

Juergen Maier (pictured), drafted in by No10 as chief of the body tasked with boosting renewables, admitted it could take decades to be fully established.

Interviewed on Sky News, he repeatedly refused to say when the commitment to slash energy bills might happen.

And Maier played down the prospect of another vow to create 1,000 jobs in Aberdeen being met any time soon.

Labour has insisted that getting 95 percent ‘clean’ power across the UK by 2030 will bring bills down by up to £300.

Quizzed about the promises, former Siemens UK chief executive Mr Maier said the policy was to ‘save families hundreds of pounds on their bills, not just in the short term, but for good’.

He argued that ‘ultimately’ it will bring prices down. ‘It is not in the remit of GB Energy to work out exactly how that energy costs then gets through to the consumer,’ he said. ‘Consumers were pledged that GB Energy is going to help bring those energy prices down and we will.’

Pressed that he was still not saying when, Mr Maier said:

‘I’m giving you an answer. More renewable energy is bringing peope’s energy bills down.’

Asked whether it was all a ‘bit vague’, he replied:

‘I know that you are asking me for a date as to when I can bring that. GB Energy has only just been brought into creation…’

The government has also suggested that GB Energy will create 1,000 jobs for Aberdeen, where it is based. The city has long been a base for the oil industry.

But Mr Maier said:

‘Great British Energy itself is going to create over the next five years, 200 or 300 jobs in Aberdeen.

‘That will be the size of our team. I have said in the very long term when we become a major energy champion it may be many more than that.’

Challenged to define ‘long term’, he said:

‘Look, we grow these companies. Energy companies grow over 10 or 20 years, and we are going to be around in 20 years.’

‘Net Zero’ Secretary Ed Miliband has said that ‘logically’ a switch to ‘clean’ energy will result in lower bills.

He told MPs before Christmas:

‘The truth is that there is only one way to get bills down sustainably in this country and that is driving to clean energy.’

Editor’s note: how these people can make such ludicrous claims is beyond me, especially when energy consultant Martin Lewis has just said energy bills will be rising soon, by between five and ten percent.
